The issue of mismanaged waste is gaining urgent attention worldwide, especially in the context of plastic pollution. Recent discussions around the upcoming global plastics treaty have highlighted innovative approaches to address this growing concern.

A notable advancement is the real-time interactive prediction tool developed by researchers at UC Berkeley. This tool allows UN negotiators to simulate outcomes of various policy scenarios, enabling them to align on ambitious, informed treaty policies to reduce mismanaged waste. Such technological innovations are crucial in shaping effective environmental policies.

Additionally, the treaty analysis includes options like phasing out single-use packaging. Though these items are lightweight, their environmental impact is substantial. Many countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, and India, have already taken strides in banning certain single-use plastics, demonstrating that impactful solutions are feasible and already in action.

However, as emphasised by experts, recycling alone is not the solution. We need comprehensive strategies involving countries and companies to limit the amount of plastics entering our environment. This includes rethinking packaging choices by fast-moving consumer goods companies, highlighting the need for a collective effort in tackling this global issue.

At Enval, we are committed to contributing to these global efforts. We believe in adopting and supporting policies and practices that manage waste effectively and prevent its mismanagement in the first place.
